Maritime Adventures that offer a touch of
Difference
Getting out on the water at this
time of year is refreshing and a lot of
fun, according to Phil Wiig (right),
director of Rodney’s latest adventure
tourism company. The Auckland Maritime
Adventure Company - AMAC.
AMAC aims
to provide a unique maritime adventure.
In addition to the standard fishing,
diving and sightseeing charters
available, AMAC incorporates activities
such as off-shore camping, surfing,
rock-fishing and kayak adventures.
“We are looking at
really getting into a bit of off-shore camping
and unique river cruising this summer,’ says
Phil, who believes that Rodney residents have
been missing out on some great spots when it
comes to
camping.
Off-shore camping sites are a
hidden treasure enjoyed on AMAC
excursions.
Cruising
options include a sightseeing trip
around the Gulf, leading into a
leisurely 10-kilometre cruise up the
Warkworth.
Clients have the option of dining at a
variety of restaurants along the river
bank before being returned to a location
of their choice. With his extensive
knowledge of the Hauraki Gulf, Phil is
able to take clients out on a fully
guided camping or snorkelling trip.
Dolphin
and whale watching trips are also
available.
Working in conjunction with two other
charter companies, AMAC is able to
accommodate almost any request
when it comes to
adventure on the water, says Phil, from
a family of five to a corporate
group of 20 wanting a sightseeing tour,
water-based activities or an enjoyable
afternoon on the water.
With the
co-operation of Rodney Tourism,
Phil and his partners are keen to
promote the Rodney district and all that
it has to offer, letting customers
venture out into areas and experiencing
activities they may not have thought
about previously. With over 20 years
experience in the Zealand Navy,
including his fishing and diving
experience on the Hauraki Gulf, Phil is
looking forward to sharing his passion
and experience of the outdoors with his
clients.

It’s a beautiful clear
morning - there’s not a
ripple on the water apart from
the dolphins playing around in
the distance.
Its one of those mornings you
wake up and think, ‘this is why
I live on the Hibiscus Coast’.
It’s the
perfect setting for hopping in a kayak
and taking a leisurely paddle across the
water.
Kayaking is a great way to get out and
really appreciate and experience the
beautiful surroundings the Hibiscus
Coast has to offer.
The Yakity Yak Kayak Club, run
by Canoe and Kayak North Shore
is a group of everyday folk who
enjoy the sociable side of
kayaking while concentrating on
training. “There is a growing
number of people taking to the
water in kayaks,” says Rob
Howarth, managing director of
Canoe and Kayak Mairangi Bay.
‘Whether
it’s for a bit of recreational fishing,
getting close to nature or just to get a
bit of exercise, kayaking is something
that can be enjoyed by all.’
‘The Yakitv Yak Kayak Club concentrates
on getting you out on the water with the
correct framing and gear, and lets you
enjoy your time out on the water with a
great group of like-minded people.”
